Tellusbarn’s Torget preschool in Rinkeby has received high marks in the Swedish Schools Inspectorate’s review of preschools in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas. In both areas assessed, Tellusbarn was rated as performing “to a high degree.”

The Swedish Schools Inspectorate is currently conducting a quality review of the work of school operators and principals to create favorable conditions for high-quality education in preschools located in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas. The review covers 30 school operators, both independent and municipal. All preschools were selected based on their location in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas.

The review covers two areas with the following questions:

1. To what extent does the school authority actively implement appropriate measures to improve the conditions for high-quality education in preschools located in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas?

2. To what extent does the principal create the necessary conditions for preschool teachers to lead and deliver high-quality instruction in preschools located in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas?

One of the preschools reviewed is Tellusbarn’s Torget Preschool, located at Rinkeby Torg, and the preschool received a good rating.

The Swedish Schools Inspectorate believes that Tellusbarn focuses extensively on initiatives that improve the conditions for high-quality education in preschools located in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas. The Swedish Schools Inspectorate considers that Tellusbarn’s governance and management of the preschool are conducted with a long-term perspective and a holistic view of the preschool’s mission.

The review also shows that Tellusbarn has a good understanding of what is required to ensure high-quality education in preschool, as well as a well-founded understanding of the causes of the challenges the preschool faces, and prioritizes initiatives based on identified areas for improvement.

The Swedish Schools Inspectorate also notes that, in her educational leadership, the principal focuses on the teaching mission and has a good understanding of how well teaching objectives are being met.

“Tellusbarn focuses on preschools in socially disadvantaged areas,” says Torget’s principal, Narges Moshiri, who is also the founder of Tellusbarn and vice chair of the board at Tellusgruppen. “Based on our ‘key preschools’ concept, we lay the foundation in the Swedish language for children who don’t hear much Swedish at home.” For example, we use a read-aloud method called Dialogic Book Reading, which strengthens the children’s ability to learn the Swedish language. That is why it is especially gratifying that our efforts are also reflected in the Swedish Schools Inspectorate’s review and that our work demonstrates long-term results.
